Tablecloth:
Some are just decorative coverings, although they might also assist shield the table from dents and spills. Other tablecloths are made to be laid out on a dining table before the placement of the cutlery and food. Some tablecloths feature complementary napkins, placemats, or other ornamental accents as part of an overall
table setting. Special tablecloths include "runners," which merely hang over the table at its two ends, and "table protectors," which offer a layer of padding beneath a regular tablecloth.
Ø Shapes and sizes:
A tablecloth is the material used to cover a table. While
some are merely cosmetic coverings, others may help protect the table from
dings and spills. Before setting the food and cutlery on the dining table,
other tablecloths are designed to be spread out. As part of a complete table
setting, some tablecloths come with matching napkins, placemats, or other
decorative accessories. "Runners," which only hang over the table at
its two ends, and "table protectors," which provide additional
padding beneath a standard tablecloth, are examples of special tablecloths.
Ø Fabrics and care:
Dining tablecloths can be created from nearly any material,
including delicate textiles like embroidered silk. Today, they are commonly
made of cotton, a poly-cotton blend, or a wipe-clean PVC-coated material.
Tablecloths used for eating are quickly soiled, so ease of laundering is a
crucial factor.
Ø History:
Tablecloths are first referenced in writing by an ancient
Latin Spanish poet named Martial in about 100 AD. [1]
A white, or mostly white, tablecloth used to be the norm for
a dining table in many European civilizations. Spreading a fine white linen or
cotton cloth on the table before a feast in an affluent home was a crucial step
in the later mediaeval era. With the exception of the very impoverished,
placing crockery on a cloth has been a standard practise over time. [2]
Ø Special cases:
Since the Middle Ages, Perugia tablecloths and napkins have
been produced. These linens are white with unique woven blue stripes and
designs. Church linen is also linked with this design. [3]
Richly coloured, thick draperies with fringe in deep hues,
including floor-length tablecloths, adorned Victorian interiors in abundance.
Ø Cultural references:
Pulling a weighted tablecloth away from a table while
leaving the plates behind is a common "magic trick." This ruse makes
use of inertia. It is referred to as a tablecloth pull or yank.
